About Us

Artists Collaborative Theatre (ACT) made a name and a home for itself in Elkhorn City, Kentucky. Officially incorporated in 2001, ACT completed 15 years of service to east Kentucky and southwest Virginia in 2017 and is quickly approaching its 20th anniversary in 2022! In those years, ACT built a company reputation as a community theatre delivering professional quality work through strong education and personal connection.

In 2008—funded largely through Coal Severance Tax funds— ACT’s $500,000 black box theatre opened. The new, handicap accessible, 100 seat, 5,000 square feet facility features yearround theatre and community programming. We have 7 productions per year with 12 performances per production and a free educational program serving over 50 student actors per semester. Additionally, over 2,000 K-12 matinee students are reached each semester through our touring youth troupe, dubbed the ACT Kidz.

In early 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the region, ACT’s iconic big blue theatre building was lost in a quickly-burning electric fire that broke out in the middle of the night. While no one was harmed and our theatre family remains strong, the loss was devastating both financially and emotionally. ACT begun work on a new, secondary location in Elkhorn City in early 2021 and expects not only a full recovery after a hard year, but is excited for new growth and possibilities. We know the power and potential ACT has carried since day one.

ACT is a celebration and showcase for our local talent while strengthening communities through volunteerism. We have a core volunteer company of 150 local artists and have open auditions each season to attract new volunteers and continue to grow. ACT local volunteers act, direct, choose scripts, teach, perform all technical duties, clean, set building, scenic design, sound design, lighting design, technical operations, acting, directing, costuming, box office, front of house, house manager, stage manager, acting, teaching, musicians, cleaning, maintenance, marketing, run the business of the theatre, and anything that is required to make ACT successful. We empower citizens who would never define themselves as artists to own and share their talents publicly.

ACT is the most award winning community theatre in the state of Kentucky. ACT’s mission: to create, promote, present, and advance cultural exposure to and training in the performing arts for area residents and visitors and to provide educational experiences through a collaborative effort. Artistic Objective: to become the theatrical arts destination of east Kentucky and southwest Virginia, nationally recognized for quality productions and educational training in theatre arts and life skills.

Special Note:
ACT is proud to be fiscally responsible, operating within budget every year and solvent.
